Entertainment Giant Disney Makes Historic AI Commitment With OpenAI

Date:

Disney has made a historic commitment to artificial intelligence with a $1 billion investment in OpenAI and a licensing agreement that brings its character library to AI video generation. The deal provides Sora with rights to more than 200 characters spanning Disney’s vast entertainment portfolio.

The three-year licensing partnership announced Thursday allows users to create short videos featuring Disney characters through text-based prompts on the Sora platform. These AI-generated social videos can be shared and viewed by fans, opening new creative possibilities. The agreement carefully excludes any reproduction of actor likenesses or voices.

Disney’s engagement with OpenAI extends into multiple operational areas. The company will deploy OpenAI’s technology for new product development and customer experiences, while implementing ChatGPT across its workforce. This broad integration reflects Disney’s view of AI as a transformative force in entertainment and business.

CEO Bob Iger framed the collaboration as representing a significant moment for the entertainment sector. He emphasized Disney’s commitment to responsibly extending its storytelling capabilities through generative AI while respecting and protecting creators and their contributions. This messaging appears designed to address concerns from entertainment professionals.

Major studios have generally maintained a cautious distance from AI companies, worried about data usage and labor relations. OpenAI has pursued discussions with several studios about Sora’s creative and commercial applications, but Disney’s agreement represents a breakthrough. The updated Sora platform, launched in September as an invitation-only app, allows users to generate videos from text prompts, view community content, and create AI avatars that can be incorporated into videos with owner approval.
