France Unveils New Voluntary Military Service for Young Citizens

Date:

France will introduce a new voluntary military service program lasting 10 months for young citizens, primarily aged 18 and 19, amid growing security concerns in Europe. President Emmanuel Macron announced that the initiative, set to begin by mid-2026, aims to strengthen national readiness in the face of “accelerating global threats.”

The program offers participants at least €800 per month, along with food, accommodation, and discounted rail travel. Volunteers will be deployed only within France, although individuals with specialised skills—such as engineering or medical expertise—may apply up to age 25. Macron emphasized that France will not return to compulsory conscription but said the country needs greater “mobilisation” from its youth.

France plans to recruit 3,000 volunteers in 2026, increasing to 10,000 by 2030 and potentially reaching 50,000 by 2036. After completing the program, participants may transition into civilian careers, join the reserves, or enter active military service. The initiative aligns France with several European nations adopting similar measures in response to rising geopolitical tensions, particularly regarding Russia.

Macron reaffirmed that the programme strengthens national defence without sending young people into foreign conflicts. The move comes as European countries reconsider military preparedness, balancing modern security needs with public expectations.
