Putin Uses New Year Address to Promote Unity and War Effort

Date:

Russian President Vladimir Putin used his New Year’s address to rally public support for Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine, portraying the nation as united behind its armed forces as the war moves toward a fourth year.

Speaking from the Kremlin, Putin praised Russian soldiers fighting on the front lines, telling them that millions of citizens stood with them and expressed confidence in eventual victory. He emphasized themes of national unity, sovereignty and loyalty to the state, saying Russia’s strength lies in collective resolve and dedication to the country’s future.

The address followed a traditional format and was broadcast across Russia’s multiple time zones as the New Year began. Unlike the previous year’s speech, which featured uniformed troops and a more overt wartime tone, this year’s message was more restrained while still reinforcing support for the military operation.

The speech also coincided with the anniversary of Putin’s rise to power, marking more than two decades since he assumed leadership of Russia.
