President Donald Trump issued a stinging rebuke of Iran’s peace negotiation tactics on Thursday, using a Truth Social post to accuse the country of conducting a dishonest and ultimately self-defeating diplomatic performance. Trump claimed that Iranian negotiators were privately desperate for a deal while their government pretended publicly to be engaged in unhurried deliberation. He warned that the tactics would not work and that Iran was running out of time to get serious.
The US peace proposal, covering 15 specific provisions, offers Iran a comprehensive package that includes sanctions relief, a nuclear programme rollback, missile restrictions, and the resumption of normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a critically important energy route, handling approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supply. Iran’s rejection of this offer has blocked progress and left the peace process without momentum.
Iran has publicly stated its own alternative conditions through state media, including demands for the protection of its officials from targeted strikes, formal assurances against future wars, reparations for wartime damage, and internationally recognized sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. These conditions reflect a government with expectations that go well beyond what the US proposal currently offers. Closing the gap between the two sides will require sustained and difficult negotiations.
The war’s human toll continues to grow with every passing day. Over 1,500 people have been killed in Iran and nearly 1,100 in Lebanon, with additional deaths in Israel and across the region. Thirteen US military personnel have died, and millions of civilians in Iran and Lebanon have been forced from their homes by the ongoing conflict.
Trump’s rebuke of Iran’s tactics on Thursday was both a critique and a call to action. Military strikes continue even as diplomats seek a path forward, creating a situation of extraordinary tension and danger. Iran must now decide whether to heed this rebuke and change course or continue down a path that Trump has made clear leads nowhere good.
