The InterContinental Phuket Resort has achieved a significant milestone by securing a sustainability certification from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). This makes it the first InterContinental property in Thailand and the third IHG Hotels & Resorts establishment in the country to earn this prestigious recognition. The certification process was conducted by Control Union Certifications, a GSTC-accredited body, which evaluated the resort across four key areas of sustainable tourism: management, socioeconomic impacts, cultural impacts, and environmental performance.
InterContinental Phuket Resort has implemented a range of initiatives to enhance its sustainability, focusing on water and energy conservation, food-waste reduction, local sourcing, ocean protection, and community engagement. Notably, the resort utilizes an Oklin Food Waste Composter, which processes approximately 125 kilograms of food waste daily, reducing its volume by 80-90% within 24 hours and converting it into fertilizer. This initiative contributes to producing around 360 kilograms of fertilizer monthly, benefiting local organizations, schools, gardens, and farms. Additionally, AI-based food-waste monitoring assists culinary teams in optimizing portion sizes, purchasing, and inventory practices.
The resort’s environmental efforts extend to the nearby Kamala Beach through the Proud Kamala program, which aims to preserve about three kilometers of coastline and minimize marine waste. Furthermore, the resort supports the Ocean For All Foundation’s “License to Clean” initiative, which deploys a coastal-cleaning catamaran to collect and manage waste from the waters surrounding Kamala. Water conservation is another priority, with approximately 80% of landscape irrigation needs met through treated wastewater and additional strategies like rainwater harvesting helping to reduce reliance on potable water.
As part of its commitment to sustainability, the resort has also achieved LEED Gold certification, implementing energy-efficient measures such as LED lighting, motion sensors, lighting controls, and energy monitoring, which collectively aim to deliver 25% energy savings. Local sourcing is integral to the resort’s operations, involving collaboration with over 19 farmers and communities in Thailand, including producers in Phang Nga. Some of these farms utilize the fertilizer generated from the resort’s food-waste composting process, creating a sustainable loop from food production to kitchen waste management.
General Manager Bjorn Courage emphasized that the GSTC certification serves as an independent endorsement of the resort’s sustainability efforts and provides a framework for ongoing improvement in its environmental and community programs. Situated on Kamala Beach, the InterContinental Phuket Resort features 221 rooms, suites, and villas, along with various guest amenities such as restaurants, bars, wellness facilities, and swimming pools.
