Collins Dictionary has unveiled its annual list of new and notable words, with the AI-driven term “vibe coding” taking the top honor as Word of the Year for 2025. The list provides a comprehensive look at the language of our time, touching on everything from artificial intelligence and workplace burnout to social media posturing.
The winner, “vibe coding,” is defined as the practice of turning natural language into computer code using AI. Coined by OpenAI’s Andrej Karpathy, the term saw a “huge increase in usage” since February, according to lexicographers. Its selection highlights a major shift in software development, making it more accessible to non-programmers.
The list also captures a fascinating evolution in our approach to work and leisure. “Micro-retirement” earned a spot, described as a break between periods of employment used to pursue personal interests. This trend signals a move away from the traditional, linear career path. This is complemented by “taskmasking,” the act of faking productivity, a nod to the pressures of modern work.
Also reflecting new lifestyle choices is “coolcation,” a term for a holiday taken to a place with a cool climate. Its inclusion likely points to a growing trend of travelers seeking to escape extreme summer heat, a subtle nod to a changing environment.
These lifestyle terms were joined by a host of tech and social buzzwords. “Clanker” (an insult for AI), “broligarchy” (the tech elite), “biohacking” (DIY health optimization), “aura farming” (cultivating a cool persona), and “Henry” (high earner, not rich yet) all made the list, reflecting the complex anxieties and aspirations of 2025.
