Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is currently visiting Tehran, where he is engaging in discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. This visit underscores Moscow’s efforts to bolster diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has indicated that the meetings will center on the tense situation in the Persian Gulf, exploring potential resolutions to the crisis, and examining opportunities for collaboration in energy, transport, and economic projects. This comes against the backdrop of a strategic partnership agreement signed between Russia and Iran in 2025, which has significantly reinforced bilateral ties, although it stops short of including any mutual defense obligations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently articulated Moscow’s willingness to act as a mediator in attempts to bring an end to the Middle East conflict. Lavrov’s presence in Tehran is seen as a strategic move in line with these mediating ambitions. This initiative, however, has not gone without scrutiny, as U.S. President Donald Trump has raised questions regarding Russia’s level of support for Iran.
