South Korean President Orders Investigation Into DMZ Mine Explosion Injuring Soldiers

Date:

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has urged a comprehensive investigation into a mine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that injured three soldiers. During a Cabinet meeting, President Lee emphasized the need for a swift and transparent inquiry, in collaboration with the United Nations Command, to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

The explosion occurred on September 21 as soldiers were clearing a path in the western sector of the DMZ in preparation for a planned joint inspection. Preliminary evidence from South Korea’s military suggests that North Korean land mines were likely responsible for the blast. A joint investigation involving both South Korean and UN Command personnel is currently ongoing.

President Lee expressed his concern for the injured soldiers and their families, urging authorities to prevent the spread of unverified claims while the investigation progresses. He also highlighted the importance of reinforcing South Korea’s defense capabilities, including the advancement of military technologies.

The final results of the investigation are expected to determine the origin of the mines and provide clarity on the circumstances leading to the explosion. South Korean authorities have indicated that appropriate actions will be considered should the investigation confirm North Korean responsibility.
