Zelensky Says US Pursues June Resolution with Florida as Neutral Ground

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that the United States is working toward a June conclusion to the Russia-Ukraine war and has offered to host the next round of peace talks in Miami. This development represents a more direct American role in facilitating negotiations between the warring parties.

The announcement came in remarks to reporters that were made public early Saturday. Zelensky emphasized that this would be the first time the US has proposed hosting Ukrainian and Russian negotiating teams on American soil, signaling heightened US engagement in the peace process. “The United States has proposed for the first time that the two negotiating teams — Ukraine and Russia — meet in the United States, probably in Miami, in a week’s time,” the Ukrainian leader stated.

The planned Miami session would follow two earlier rounds of US-facilitated talks held in Abu Dhabi beginning in January. Those sessions produced a significant humanitarian outcome through a major prisoner exchange but made no headway on territorial issues. Russia currently occupies roughly one-fifth of Ukraine and is demanding both recognition of these occupied territories and additional control over the strategically vital Donetsk region as prerequisites for peace.

Ukraine has consistently and firmly opposed any territorial concessions, maintaining that sovereign borders must be respected under international law. Russian officials have declared their territorial demands essential to any settlement and have warned they will pursue military solutions if diplomatic talks do not yield favorable territorial agreements. This fundamental disagreement on territory remains the most significant challenge to achieving a lasting peace.

While diplomatic channels remain open, military conflict persists. In a video posted Saturday, Zelensky revealed that Russian forces had struck facilities critical to Ukraine’s nuclear power plant operations during the previous night. The attacks forced multiple nuclear reactor units to reduce their power output, with one reactor shutting down automatically. Zelensky described the strikes as unprecedented terrorism and demanded that Russia prove its commitment to negotiations by halting attacks on essential civilian infrastructure.
