Zelenskyy Seeks Direct Peace Negotiations With Putin to Resolve Ukraine Conflict

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a public appeal for direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, suggesting a face-to-face meeting in a neutral location to advance efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict. Zelenskyy proposed potential venues for the talks, including Switzerland, Turkey, or an Arab nation, emphasizing that decisive resolutions can only be achieved through direct dialogue between the leaders of the two nations. He urged for a specific date to be established for these discussions.

In his proposal, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine would agree to a full ceasefire during the negotiations and recommended an all-for-all prisoner swap as a preliminary step to build trust. Additionally, he called for the return of Ukrainian civilians and children who have been relocated from conflict-affected areas. This overture comes amidst continuing military actions from both sides, with Russia intensifying its aerial bombardments on Ukraine and Ukraine expanding its long-range drone attacks deep into Russian territory.

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed support for the potential meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin, highlighting the necessity for both parties to make concessions in order to reach a peaceful resolution. The Kremlin has acknowledged receiving Zelenskyy’s message, although Russian officials mentioned that the proposal is still under review and details have not been fully assessed.

The call for dialogue underscores the urgent need for a diplomatic solution as the conflict persists, affecting countless lives and further destabilizing the region. Zelenskyy’s initiative reflects a willingness to explore peaceful avenues despite ongoing hostilities, with the hope that direct negotiations might pave the way for a much-needed settlement.
