South Korea’s Lee Jae Myung Stresses Diplomacy Amid US Alliance Challenges

Date:

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has called for prioritizing national interests in the country’s foreign policy amidst ongoing tensions between South Korea and the United States. Speaking at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Lee emphasized the necessity of managing disagreements with allies through dialogue and diplomacy, acknowledging that such differences are inevitable in international relations.

Lee reaffirmed the significance of the South Korea–United States alliance as a central aspect of the country’s diplomacy but stressed the importance of South Korea conducting its foreign affairs with confidence as a sovereign nation. He urged officials to address any divergences with Washington through continued engagement, aiming to prevent these issues from undermining broader bilateral relations.

The President’s remarks come amid reports of friction between Seoul and Washington over issues such as intelligence-sharing arrangements, visa delays, and communication with senior U.S. officials. These topics have sparked debate within South Korea, with opposition politicians expressing concerns about the current state of relations between the two countries.

South Korean Ambassador to the United States Kang Kyung-wha acknowledged challenges in securing high-level communication with the White House. However, she noted that discussions between relevant agencies have made progress in addressing intelligence-related concerns.

Lee’s comments underline the ongoing efforts by South Korea to navigate complex diplomatic landscapes while maintaining robust partnerships with major powers, including the United States. As the government works to safeguard national interests, the alliance with Washington remains a crucial pillar of its international strategy.
