EU Urged by South Korea to Ease New Steel Import Limits

Date:

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is optimistic that the European Union will consider his country’s concerns regarding upcoming changes to its steel import quota system, which could affect South Korean steel exports. Following a diplomatic visit to Europe, including stops in Brussels, Italy, the Vatican, and France for the G7 Summit, Lee emphasized that he directly addressed the matter with EU leaders. He urged them to prevent the new measures from becoming a trade barrier and requested special consideration for South Korea, stressing its status as both a free trade agreement partner and a strategic ally of the EU.

The European Union plans to implement a revised steel import policy starting July 1, aimed at tackling global steel overcapacity and shielding European producers from increasing imports. South Korean officials have reported significant progress in discussions with their EU counterparts and remain hopeful about achieving favorable treatment under the new regime.

In addition to trade issues, President Lee’s meetings with European leaders covered topics such as economic security, peace on the Korean Peninsula, and developments in the Middle East. He noted that these discussions showcased South Korea’s expanding international influence and the rising expectations for its role on the global stage.

President Lee’s visit underlines South Korea’s proactive approach in international diplomacy, seeking to strengthen ties and ensure that its economic interests are safeguarded amid evolving global trade landscapes. As the EU moves forward with adjusting its steel import system, South Korea’s engagement highlights the importance of strategic partnerships in navigating complex trade dynamics.
