Trump Threatens High Tariffs on Foreign Firms Without US Manufacturing Plants

Date:

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to foreign companies, stating they could face tariffs ranging from 150% to 300% if they do not establish manufacturing plants within the United States. Trump outlined that these companies have approximately 18 months to comply before the tariffs are potentially enforced. This initiative is part of his broader strategy to bolster foreign investment and expand domestic manufacturing.

The announcement coincides with ongoing efforts between the United States and South Korea to finalize a substantial $350 billion investment agreement. As part of this deal, South Korea has agreed to invest in the U.S. in return for a reduction in tariffs on Korean goods from 25% to 15%. The investment is divided into $150 billion designated for shipbuilding collaboration and $200 billion for strategic investments.

Despite progress in negotiations, some differences remain, particularly concerning South Korea’s potential involvement in the proposed Alaska LNG project. South Korean officials have expressed the need for a thorough review of the project’s commercial viability before committing to any investment. The Alaska LNG project is estimated to cost between $44.5 billion and $54.5 billion, and it would involve the construction of a major pipeline, gas treatment facilities, and an LNG terminal.

The first confirmed project under the investment agreement is a gas-fired power plant in Texas. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding potential cooperation on nuclear reactors, although these plans require further evaluation before moving forward.
