Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced strong criticism against the decision by the Trump administration to pause new sanctions on Russia. Zelenskyy warned that this suspension could embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin to escalate military operations in Ukraine. The Ukrainian leader argued that halting sanctions effectively rewards Moscow and undermines international efforts to end the conflict.
The proposed sanctions, which have been put on hold for 60 days, aimed to impose additional restrictions on Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and oil transportation network. It also intended to introduce tariffs of up to 100% on major importers of Russian oil, including China and India. The Trump administration decided to delay the sanctions to evaluate their potential impact on the global economy and U.S. economic interests, a move welcomed by Russian officials but met with concern in Kyiv.
Zelenskyy’s remarks come amid heightened Russian military activity, with recent attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as winter approaches. More than 15 major electricity generation and transmission facilities have reportedly been damaged, raising concerns about potential power shortages in Ukraine and the ability of cities to maintain essential services.
The Ukrainian president emphasized the strain these attacks are placing on the country’s air defense systems, which are increasingly challenged in intercepting missiles and drones. He called for continued international support to safeguard critical infrastructure and protect civilian populations.
Additionally, Zelenskyy expressed concern over restrictions affecting Starlink satellite internet services, which are used by Ukrainian forces. These limitations have reportedly disrupted some military operations, including those involving drone activities.
The situation underscores growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv regarding strategies for addressing the conflict, military support, and the role of sanctions. Zelenskyy maintains that sustained economic pressure on Russia is crucial for achieving a lasting peace, cautioning that easing restrictions amidst ongoing attacks could prolong the war.
