Vietnam Pledges to Bolster ASEAN–Russia Strategic Partnership

Vietnam has underscored its pivotal role in enhancing cooperation between ASEAN and Russia, following the recent ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit that celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. The summit, which saw Vietnam making noteworthy contributions, emphasized ASEAN’s central role in fostering a strategic partnership with Russia. Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung highlighted Vietnam’s efforts in promoting dialogue, cooperation, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, alongside respect for international law.

Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng led the Vietnamese delegation that proposed expanding collaboration in key sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. This was part of broader discussions at the summit, which concluded with the adoption of new frameworks aimed at bolstering ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy identified as a significant pillar of the partnership.

In a move that reflects Vietnam’s commitment to future regional cooperation, the country announced it would host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This initiative is expected to further strengthen ASEAN–Russia relations, enhancing regional stability and creating new opportunities for economic growth and collaboration across Eurasia.

During the summit, Prime Minister Hưng also engaged in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their discussions centered on expanding cooperation in various fields, including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.

Vietnam expressed optimism that the summit’s outcomes would significantly bolster ASEAN–Russia relations. The focus on collaboration in multiple sectors, particularly energy, is seen as a pathway to enhancing regional stability and fostering economic development across Eurasia. The ongoing commitment to this partnership underscores the strategic importance of the ASEAN–Russia relationship in the international arena.
