South Korean President Lee Jae Myung revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump plans to turn his attention to North Korea following the conclusion of a deal with Iran. During discussions at the G7 summit in France, President Lee shared insights from his meeting with Trump, indicating that addressing the North Korean issue is now on the agenda. Lee emphasized that the sanctions imposed on Pyongyang due to its nuclear weapons program are losing their effectiveness.
President Lee pointed out that North Korea’s escalating military collaboration with Russia, especially in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, has weakened the impact of global sanctions. He noted that even minimal support from Russia significantly bolsters North Korea’s position.
Speculation about renewed diplomatic efforts with North Korea has grown, spurred by Trump’s recent sharing of a photograph with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This image harkens back to their landmark 2018 summit in Singapore, suggesting the possibility of rekindling dialogue.
The situation in North Korea continues to be a pressing security issue in East Asia, primarily due to its nuclear weapons program. The Korean Peninsula remains in a state of technical war, as the Korean War from 1950 to 1953 concluded with an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty.
