South Korea’s Lee Demands Police Reform Amid Expanded Investigative Powers

Date:

In a significant move towards police reform, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has expressed concerns about the growing power of the police force, which could become the most dominant government agency following recent amendments to the nation’s criminal justice system. During a Cabinet meeting, President Lee underscored the urgent need to implement comprehensive reforms and called for the establishment of a specialized oversight body to ensure police accountability.

The president’s call to action follows the parliamentary approval of revisions to the Criminal Procedure Act. These changes will strip the prosecution of its investigative authority, granting the police sole responsibility for conducting criminal investigations once the new laws are enacted. President Lee has tasked the prime minister’s office with engaging public opinion and formulating a plan to create the oversight body, emphasizing the need for robust mechanisms to accompany the increased police authority.

Recent incidents have fueled the demand for stronger police accountability, notably the case involving a woman’s death on Jeju Island, which has cast doubt on the police’s handling of public safety issues. This particular case has amplified concerns about police procedures and highlighted potential shortcomings in ensuring public trust and safety.

President Lee emphasized that with greater power comes the necessity for heightened responsibility. He cautioned against the dangers of concentrated power within a single agency, which could lead to significant issues if not properly managed. To address these concerns, he has advocated for systemic changes aimed at bolstering police accountability and preventing failures in safeguarding public safety.
