Pashinyan Calls on Putin to Lift Russian Limits on Armenian Exports

Date:

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has reached out to Russian President Vladimir Putin, seeking assistance in resolving trade barriers that Russia has recently imposed on Armenian exports. During their phone conversation, Pashinyan expressed concerns that these restrictions breach bilateral agreements and contravene the regulations of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), an organization that includes both Armenia and Russia. He highlighted Armenia’s readiness to address the conflict through dialogue and urged for measures to be taken to alleviate the situation.

The trade tensions arise as the relationship between Armenia and Russia becomes increasingly strained, partly due to Armenia’s growing ties with Western countries. Just last month, Russia imposed temporary import restrictions on a range of Armenian products, including fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and alcoholic beverages. These measures have added a layer of complexity to the already delicate relations between the two nations.

Amid these trade disputes, broader tensions simmer regarding Armenia’s foreign policy trajectory. Russia has previously cautioned that Armenia’s aspirations to join the European Union could impact its standing within the EAEU. Despite these diplomatic frictions, Russia continues to be Armenia’s largest trading partner and a vital source of energy.

The ongoing trade conflict underscores the challenges Armenia faces as it navigates its international alliances. While attempting to strengthen Western relations, Armenia must also manage its critical economic and strategic ties with Russia. The outcome of Pashinyan’s appeal to Putin remains to be seen, but it highlights the complex balancing act Armenia is engaged in on the global stage.
